Best Asanas During Monthly Cycle

As we all know, light exercise improves your mood; it makes you feel better due to the higher secretion of endorphins, the feel-good chemical. So, you have decided to go ahead with yoga practice during your menstruation. You may want to avoid going to challenging classes like Ashtanga yoga, instead, opt for gentle classes like Hatha or Yin Yoga.

Now you are wondering what are the poses you should be avoiding and what are the poses best for your current state.

Here are some tips for the poses you should be avoiding :

Any poses that involve putting pressures or extreme stretch on the abdomen like:

  1. Peacock Pose (Maryunasana)
  2. Bharadvaja's Twist or Spinal Twist (Bharadvajasana)
  3. Bow Pose (Dharunasana)
  4. Upward Bow/Wheel Pose (Udvra Dharunasana/Chakrasana)
  5. Plough Pose (Halasana)
  6. Inversion Pose - as discussed in Blog Part 1

Try to substitute for more gentle and relaxing pose to ease the discomfort or to relax like:

  1. Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottasana)
  2. Moon/Hare Pose (Shasankasana)
  3. Child Pose (Balasana)
  4. Cobbler's Pose (Baddha Konasana)
  5. Head to Knee Pose (Janu Sirsasana)
  6. Corpse Pose (Shavasana)

You may also incorporate some breathing exercise in them like Bee Humming Breath (Bhramari) for instant calmness and/or Cooling Breath (Sitari or Sitkari) to draw out the excess heat.
